During 1999 and the next few years that followed, the Honda 400EX was the most sought after machine on the market by buyers looking to build a new high performance sport or race ATV. In the years that followed, the air-cooled Honda became overshadowed by other machines such as the Suzuki Z400 and later Yamaha’s YFZ450. Since then the 400EX has remained in production, mostly purchased by moderate to aggressive trail riders. When it comes to putting a machine together to go racing, most people no longer put a 400EX on their list. We think this might be a mistake and that’s why we chose the 400EX for our second episode of “Quad Builder”

There are thousands of 400EX machines out there that are nearly ready to race. Maybe they don’t have a lot of internal motor mods or maybe they lack the suspension necessary to compete in the rough and tumble world of ATV motocross, but by adding the missing parts these machines could be ideal for a casual local racer or someone looking to try their hand in the C class at the nationals. If you have a bone stock 400EX and you are thinking about building yourself a serious race quad, you might be better to sell your 400 and buy a 450. However, if you already have a lot of the smaller bolt on items such as an exhaust, nerf bars, wheels/tires, maybe some suspension and you’re a beginner level racer, trust us, you will do well in with this machine on the race track.

In the end, you may not have something as fast as a built 450 race quad, but for a beginner level racer, the EX should be easier to handle, and with its excellent frame geometry the 400EX can still handle as good as anything else out there. For this person the next few Quad Builder episodes will be of interest to you. In this first episode covering the 400EX, host Billy Maddix and Chase Cunningham, owner of Morehead Motorsports cover CT Racing’s 426cc performance motor package and Bare Performance gives our machine’s chassis the strength and looks to last for several seasons to come. Kick back and check out our latest episode of Quad Builder.
