Polaris comes into the 2012 race season with teams competing in the Grand National Cross Country series (GNCC), World Off-Road Championship series (WORCS), Best in the Desert (BITD) and Mud racing. Polaris also will continue to offer their ATV racing contingency program and has added a Side-by-Side contingency for the BITD series.

“Polaris is excited for another year of ATV and Side-by-Side Racing,” said Donna Beadle, race team manager for Polaris’ Off-Road Division. “We had a great 2011 winning several championships and we expect 2012 to be another successful year.”

National Guard/Polaris/Coastal Racing
Polaris will continue to support National Guard/Polaris/Coastal racing for 2012. William Yokley took the GNCC and WORCS championships in his National Guard RANGER RZR XP 900 and will look to four-peat in the GNCC series this year. Yokley’s teammate, Scott Kiger finished third in the GNCC “Open Modified” class in his RZR XP and is back for 2012.

Rath Racing
Rath Racing is back for a third year to race the RZR XP in GNCC. Daryl Rath continues to dial in his RZR XP and will race the “Open Modified” Side-by-Side class.

Team Hendershot
Polaris has added Team Hendershot to their GNCC race team for 2012. Team Hendershot finished second overall in their RZR XP in the GNCC “Open Modified” class behind William Yokley. They will race the RZR XP for 2012.

Jagged X
Jagged X is back for 2012 for a run at the Best in the Desert championship, racing the familiar No.1919, with a newly built RZR XP 4. Brandon Schueler, Chad Riccio, Blake Van de Loo and Mike West look to recapture the championship for 2012. Jagged X also has signed 2011 BITD Champion, Matt Parks to run with the team this year in a second RZR XP 4. Both new RZR’s will be revealed at the Mint 400, in March. Parks started the 2012 BITD series out on a high note winning the “Pro UTV class,” at the Parker 250, in January.

Walker Evans
RJ Anderson will switch gears this year and race the WORCS series with his new Walker Evans RZR XP. Anderson raced a few WORC races in 2011 and ended up winning the final race of the season in the “SxS 1” class. He looks to capture the championship for 2012.

High Lifter
Team High Lifter-Polaris Racing will be muddin’ on Polaris’ once again for 2012. Racers include Brian Haughton, Josh Monroe and Adam Schumaker and will race the Sportsman XP 850, Sportsman 550, RANGER XPs and RANGER RZRs.

Polaris Contingency
Polaris also will continue to offer an ATV race contingency program, in three ATV racing series, GNCC, WORCS and the Heartland Challenge, and has added a side-by-side contingency in the Best in the Desert Series. The total purse is more than $85,000. Racers must race 2008 or newer Sportsman XP 850 or Sportsman 550 ATVs for the ATV contingency and must run the Pro 1 class in a RANGER RZR product in Best in the Desert. More information and complete rules about Polaris’ racing contingencies can be found at www.polarisfactoryracing.com.

The models, named in its latest issue currently on newsstands, are: 2012 Can-Am Outlander 1000 XT, Can-Am Renegade 1000 and the Can-Am Commander 800R.

“The BIC Awards were developed in response to what we perceived as a need for better industry awards,” explained Mark Lester, Dirt Trax Magazine publisher. “As a result we have developed the categories you see in the current BIC award protocol for Best In Class honours each year. The emergence of BIC awards for two categories of SxS vehicles is an indication of how we’ve attempted to ensure we’re paying attention to emerging and significant categories in the ATV / SXS business.”

Dirt Trax Magazine editors determine best-in-class machines by comparing them to competitive models within their class during testing. Vehicles are compared in areas such as power, handling, suspension, ergonomics and build quality, among other determining factors.

“Having three Can-Am vehicles receive best-in-class honours is a tremendous accomplishment for everyone at BRP,” stated Yves Leduc, Vice-President and General Manager, North America. “Industry recognition and the Best In Class awards are always something to strive for and prove to off-road enthusiasts and it is positive reinforcement for all the dedicated work put in by our design, engineering and marketing teams.”

Redesigned for 2012, the Can-Am Outlander 1000 was a unanimous choice as the Best Big Bore Sport Utility ATV. Editors raved about its second-generation chassis and new 976cc Rotax engine, calling it “the most outrageously fast and powerful ATV ever built and the best handling and best riding ATV BRP has ever produced.” Editors named the 2012 Can-Am Renegade 1000 the Best Trail Sport ATV, saying “the new chassis takes what was a stand out Trail Sport 4X4 and makes it literally incomparable in the segment.” The Can-Am Commander 800R was selected as the Best In Class Dual Purpose UTV for its unequalled handling and ride and smooth power delivery for both work and play.

The all-new Outlander 800R (Best Big Bore Sport Utility ATV), the DS 450 (Best Hardcore Sport ATV) and the Can-Am Outlander Max 650 (Best 2-Up ATV) were named runner-up vehicles.

RJ Anderson and his Walker Evans, Holz Racing Products built RZR XP started 2012 with a bang winning the Soboba GP UTV race and also broke the record for the longest jump in a factory-powered side-by-side at 151 feet!

The Soboba GP is a historic Southern California race event, held on the private Soboba Indian Reservation and known for its glorious dirt, the Soboba GP was famed for its once-a-year MX event. While the MX racing at the GP still draws pro’s from around the world of factory MX racing, it is apparent that today the main draw is the side-by-side race. The race has one class, the racers are lined up in a single row based upon the order they registered in and it’s a land rush start once the green flag drops. From there, the race is a 2-hour long moto through the hills and MX-styled infield. The track totals just over six miles long and causes for some serious attrition. This is not a race that you try to win in the first lap. Patience is key, consistency is even more important, and knowing how to keep your vehicle alive is the trick! On this day Anderson followed his game plan to a “T.” While others took on the task of trying to race the first lap like it’s the last, Anderson chose to get the best start he could, settle into a good pace, and start to pick off the slower traffic one by one. Within an hour, Anderson would be the first SxS on course. Thirty-three side-by-sides would thunder into turn 1 and only 14 would make it to the checkered flag. Fortunately for Anderson and the Walker Evans Racing team, Anderson would cross that line first. The SxS Anderson raced was built specifically for the 2012 WORCS racing season and was easily the fastest SxS on the track that day winning the race with a stock RZR XP 900 power plant! The team picked right up where they left off last season, taking home a huge win at the opening race of 2012!

The Soboba GP was a great test and shake down for their new Holz Racing Products built RZR XP that Walker Evans Racing will race in the WORCS racing series for 2012. The next WORCS race will be Buffalo Bills, at Primm, NV, February 11-12.

Official Team Polaris/Xtreme Plus participated for the first time ever at the Dakar 2012, the world’s toughest off-road race. After having developed a special new FIA class (T3) for the RZR, the Polaris/Xtreme Plus Team had run some tests in several events, and won the Dakar Series, in Russia, in July 2011.

But Dakar is definitely another story, with more than 9000 kilometers of racing, three countries crossed in South America, 469 participants, and various terrain and extreme weather conditions. ASO, the promoter, reported that the 2012 edition was the toughest event in many years.

Team Polaris/Xtreme Plus enrolled a very experienced driver Willy Alcaraz No. 374, who had participated in Dakar in several classes as a driver and co-driver, and set up one goal for the first event, reach Lima in Peru!

After two weeks of the race, Alcaraz proved the RZR XP is one of a kind, as the team reached the initial goal by crossing the finish line in Lima without any technical issues. But they also claimed the win in two different classes: T3 and solo. The No. 374 managed also to finish some of the longest and hardest stages in the top 30, finishing 42 overall in the car class. No doubt, this is a unique and an historical performance for Alcaraz, the Polaris RZR XP and Xtreme Plus Team!

“In Puerto Plata, at the start of the race, everybody was amazed to see me alone in my small car. Some of them were even laughing at me!,” said Alcaraz. “But days after days, they were less and less smiling when I was overtaking them in the dunes. Even if my top speed was inferior on some trails, the RZR XP was just incredible and fun to drive in the toughest technical section. I managed to stay always in the top 50. I had just to repair, change a couple of tires and PVT belt along the race. The vehicle was very well prepared by Xtreme Plus and the mechanic guys did a great job every night. This is an incredible result for Polaris, the team and myself!”

“We showed everybody the RZR XP is best lightweight buggy, with a dedicated class (T3) to race. It is very fun to drive and it has amazing capacities when the terrain is becoming technical,” Marco Piana, Polaris/Xtreme Plus Team Manager. “No doubt that a driver with a more expensive car and buggy will start looking at this affordable vehicle to race Bajas, Rallye Raid and Dakar.”

Both Caleb and Colten crashed but that didn’t hinder their medal pursuit whatsoever. Caleb went on to bronze while younger brother Colten earned the gold!

While ESPN televised the event live the Contour Camera Company was busy capturing some fantastic video of several of the winter sports athletes. Contour was able to get some outstanding video of Caleb and Colten’s adventures from both on and off their sleds.
